After looking at the CD cover it kind of puts me off as im abit closed minded about music and it doesn't look like I will enjoy it. But hey I will give it a try, so here we go..
Static
The first track "Static", starts with an effect that seems to be faded in with a guitar riff being played quietly and then everything else kicks in minus vocals. The guitar riff played is exactly the same one that was played during the intro except its alot louder. Everything stops after that and vocals begin, the way it is mixed/recorded, the vocals sound like they are suited for arena tours.
You can hear guitars being played quietly under the vocals and drums can be heard. The song goes soft then heavy soft then heavy. The song pretty much stays the same for the rest until about 2.25. You can hear violin being played, the drum beat has sped up and the guitaring is playing a little faster.
The Mirror
"The Mirror" begins with guitar being played softly with a delay effect added, after couple of times of this you hear another guitar join in and violin, which leads into the drum beginning. The part just before the chorus begins reminds me of Evanescence, it's just the way the vocals lead into it. I can't really describe it, kind of like its being held and then heavy guitars begin and the vocals go back to normal for the chorus.
After the second chorus you hear violin start playing and then a techno style drum sample begins. After that drums and heavy guitars begin again and another chorus kicks in. The song is ended with a fade out.
Teen
"Teen" starts with an intro similar to the previous track, with guitar and a delay effect but it does go a lot different. You hear a drum loop starting, then what sounds like feedback being turned up and then heavy guitars begin with real drums being played and the drum loop still being played. Once the vocals begin you can hear that she is singing with an effect added, but as soon as the chorus begins the effect goes.
The verse after the chorus doesn't have her singing with an effect added but you can hear a quick bit of violin being played right before the third chorus. The song ends with guitar with the delay effect being played.
Miss You
"Miss You" has a real weird sample for the intro it fades out quickly then the song stops for a second and heavy guitars kick in as well as drums. You can hear a bit of violin being played under it. That all fades out with piano hitting a few notes, and acoustic guitar begins with vocals. The guitar gets louder once violin joins in and then the song gets back into heavy guitars and drums and the song continues like that for another chorus. After the second chorus, everything stops and violin begins, once the violin stops the vocals get louder and the guitars play a little break down riff. The song ends with acoustic guitar and vocals.
Bow Link In E Minor
The intro to "Bow Link In E Minor" reminds me of an old folk song because of the way the violin is being played for the intro. The drumming and violin is mixed and played really well together. After that, you hear acoustic guitar and violin playing together. A short while after heavy guitars begin and break up the slow and folkness of the song, the heavy parts really make it sound alot better. This is definitely a great instrumental ill be playing this track alot more.
n.ss
"n.ss" is another song that has a weird sample for the intro, it lasts for about 20 seconds and straight after it heavy guitars begin along with drums. You can still hear some samples quickly being faded in and out/being played during the verse. The verse is just acoustic guitar and vocals like on other songs but as soon as the chorus begins it gets heavier again. This pattern can seem a little repetitive after a while. The way violin is played right before the little breakdown style part half way into the song is just great. The song ends abit unexpected, but another sample starts playing and it leads right into the next track.
Shut Up
When the sample at the end of "n.ss" stops everything except vocals begins. But when vocals do begin I wish they didn't. The effect that they added to it doesn't sound that good in my opinion. As these vocals are being sung, there isn't anything else being played except bass guitar. You can hear guitar start playing with a few notes every so often. Then it stops and violin begins playing something that would make you want to dance. Once the
chorus begins it reminds me abit of Rammstein, kind of weird. After the second chorus everything stops except vocals, violin and guitar. The vocals are being sung quite fast with guitar/violin keeping up. After it the violin proceeds into a solo kind of thing.
Blah-Blah
"Blah-Blah" starts with acoustic guitar that is beingplayed in a flamenco style. All of a sudden you hear drums beatingwith violin being played that again sounds like folk influenced. That all stops after a drum roll, and heavier guitars begin withanother sample being played. The drums carry on playing but witha slower beat, vocals begin and you can hear another sample.Soundslike this band loves to use samples. The chorus of this songsounds
like another song on this CD so I wouldn'trate it as well as other ones. After the second chorus, everythingstops except a sample and violin. This is played until you hear male vocals the fast violin, guitar and drum work. The malevocals scream and then the female starts to sing again. This definitely sounds alot better then just keeping it the same pattern allthe way through.
Blind Date
Another sample can be heard for the intro of "Blind Date", but to make it different they have violin that joins in that leads into a drum beat then guitar playing. This only lasts for one time through, then the vocals begin. The violin carries on until the chorus, when heavy guitars kick back in but of course right after it violin begins with vocals. After this chorus guitars and drums start playing together and you hear vocals being whispered once it stops. Violin begins and you hear some guy saying the song name a few times and then boom! Another chorus hits you.
Can't You Hear
"Cant You Hear" starts right away with female vocals that sound like a girl pop group. But thank god it isn't. You can hear a stable drum beat being played as guitar plays a riff now and then. The chorus is another one that reminds me of another song on this CD. This is probably the most radio friendly song on this CD, the pre chorus is just perfect for the radio as is the chorus as it's really catchy. Im not really sure what part of the song it is, so I'll just call it breakdown 1. After this first breakdown you hear the vocalist scream, which leads into acoustic guitar and violin being played. You can hear the vocals being sung really lightly. The song ends with another chorus.
At Ease
"At Ease" begins with a sample being faded in and once it's faded it quickly stops and makes way for guitars/drums. They play together for a short while and stop letting vocals begin. A drum roll leads the song into the pre chorus, the guitars speed up as do the drums. After the chorus the intro beat and riff is played then it leads into the verse, then pre chorus and then chorus again. After the chorus, you hear acoustic guitar being played quite fastly and vocals are being sung but quietly. After that another sample begins but its being played with an effect that causes it to fade in and out quite quickly. You can hear a guitar solo towards the end of this song, it isn't being played really fast but it makes the song sound alot more interesting.
Yours Faithfully
"Yours Faithfully" has everything playing for the intro, you can hardly hear the vocals, but after a couple of times of this going through it pauses for a second then speeds up a little and gets a bit heavier. The verse is another slow one that all you can hear is slow guitars and vocals.
Heavier guitars begin playing right after as the chorus starts to begin. The chorus is quite a catchy one and would be good live I would imagine. The song goes on exactly the same as before which is kind of boring because there isn't much variation.
Out Of The Great Book Of Fairytales
"Out Of The Great Book Of Fairytales" is the last song and I just hope it is a good one to end a nice CD. It begins with soft guitars and a steady but soft drum beat, the vocals start soon after and you can hear a little bit of violin playing. The lyrics sound like a fairytale being told, but I'm not really listening to them so I don't know. The chorus isn't really as heavy sounding as it is on other songs, but it suits this song more. After the second chorus you hear violin being played slowly then vocals begin, after a quick drum roll the song leads into another chorus that stays heavy after it with a violin solo being played. It does sound like there is a little bit of synth added to it, it stops quite sudden as well. The intro is faded out.
Verdict
To be honest I was enjoying this CD until about track 9 "Blah-Blah".I can imagine these songs being played in an arena with some fans singing along and everything else. They sound more of an arena band then smallvenue. I don't really like the way the verses are always so slow, and the way parts remind me of other songs. That's why this gets a 3. It sounds repetitive after a while of listening to it.
