The first incarnation of Drug Honkey arose in 1997 in the form of Chronic Illogic. Honkey Head (Paul Gillis) having come from the death metal outfits Crematorium and Embodied (which had become Gorgasm by that time) and BH Honkey (Adam Smith) emerging from the drum 'n' bass & rave scene in Chicago looked to meld several styles into one & create something different & original.
Struggles with members and creative differences led to a relatively quick disintegration of Chronic Illogic and Paul and Adam moved forward in 1999 under the monicker of Drug Honkey. Their S/T full length surfaced in 2002. It was a harsh mixture of electronics & weirdness. It was also mostly a studio album as there was very little live instrumentation. Sample driven and meticulously concocted, it is an important piece of the band's history and definitely has strong points, but not something reflected upon regularly as it didn't fully represent the direction they were destined to venture.
In 2003 it was determined that a full lineup was needed and Hobbs (Gabe Grosso) was recruited on guitar and Black Honkey (Jason Sneed) on bass. Adam concentrated solely on drums and Paul handled vocals/synths/samples. With a solid lineup the band polished their style and vision with the result being the 2005 full length Hail Satan. This album introduced a glimpse into the group's psychedelic/doom sound that is still present today. It also spawned one of the bands most sought after tracks/videos, "Heroin".
After the release of Hail Satan, problems arose with Black Honkey and it was decided to make a change. Brown Honkey (Ian Brown) was chosen as the replacement. This decision ended up being the correct one as it became the final piece in the lineup that needed to be set.
Throughout 2006 and 2007 Drug Honkey played several shows with the new and improved lineup at several great venues in Chicago including the legendary -Metro- as well as -The Double Door- where the band recorded what would become their live EP Quatro de Mayo. This EP showed extreme promise for the direction the band was headed in. The track "China Black (Heroin Pt. 2)" from the EP was a massive piece of work and ended up earning a spot on their following full length.
In July of 2008 the third full length Death Dub was released, and this showcased the band at their dirtiest, heaviest and most tripped out level thus far. Many great shows were played in support of the album throughout Chicago and the surrounding states in the midwest, one of the most memorable being with Today is the Day. Death Dub was circulated independently quite well in the underground and received several great reviews and garnered the attention of many indiviuals including Kunal Choksi, owner of the acclaimed Diabolical Conquest Webzine and newly formed Diabolical Conquest Records. A deal was struck between the two entities and Drug Honkey's upcoming full length Ghost in the Fire is set to be released on DC sometime in early to mid 2011.
Drug Honkey has upped the ante on every release thus far and have no intention on letting up. The bar is set high and this band of lunatics is in position to jump to new levels of brain altering sickness. Ghost in the Fire is set to destroy your mind.
Drug Honkey's Album "Death Dub" Distributed via Diabolical Conquest
Drug Honkey's music defies conventional categorization. The most general yet accurate description would be something like psychedelic death/doom meets early Godflesh-esque industrialisms/electronics, but it still falls short of the full scope of their music. It is even dark, trippy, sludgy, filthy, noisy, atmospheric and more. Album title 'Death Dub' is a tag that probably best suits their music. Being the third and latest full length album of the band, Death Dub is undoubtedly Drug Honkey's most accomplished and extreme effort till date. Embarking on this harsh, futuristic and darkly hallucinogenic trip of theirs is bound to alter your perceptions of extreme metal music.
Diabolical Conquest has bought remaining copies of 'Death Dub' from the band and taken upon itself the task of promoting it and giving it worldwide distribution.
