As We Fight - Interview with Soren - February 2008

As We Fight are an indepentant band from Denmark - hardly a country known inernationally for it's metal output, yet As We Fight prove that there is always good metal if you go looking for it. What's even more impressive is that they have a great sound, professional production, and well designed presentation to their albums and website - it's not so common to see this level of design with bands that don't have the commercial guidance of a label to steer them.

I spoke to Soren, bassist for As We Fight, about metal in general, and working with Jacob Bredahl of Hatesphere on the upcoming album.

Pharmer4: Hey Soren, let;s get this shit started with the more mundane, give the reasers an idea of what As We Fight are about. Who would you include as your predecessors; which bands inspired you to make the music you do?

Soren: It depends on who you ask in the band. For my part – Megadeth! For Gun it is Pantera. Niller loves Iron Maiden. Martin would say stuff like Slayer and Jason is pinned down on Danzig!

P4: Nice mix there. It’s good to see that there is a mix of influences, rather than you all being interested by the same stuff. Do any or all of these bands influence your style?

S: Definitely. We are all involved in the songwriting process, so with all these bands in mind, there are bound to be some influence caught there.

P4: Who would you class as your contempories; bands that you see as your equals in the current scene?

S: Soundwise it is bands like The Haunted, Himsa, Nine and stuff like that.

P4: Name 10 albums you can't live without, or you would recommend to someone above all others:
S:
NINE – killing angels (rock/metal from Sweden! Amazing stuff)

MEGADETH – rust in peace (my favorite album)
TESTAMENT – demonic (thrash metal heroes!)
NEUROSIS – times of grace (anything by them rocks!)
ANTHRAX – we’ve come for you all (their revival!!!)
FIREHOUSE – st (hairmetal stuff!)
DARKEST HOUR – hidden hands (love the sound of this album)
INVOCATOR – through the flesh to the soul (Danish metal kings)
THE FASHION – st (new album. Great rock album)
PLASTIC PRIDE – ammunition spent (rock from Sweden. They are called Khoma today)

P4: Who would you like to tour with?

S: I think that every metal band would love to tour with Slayer!!! I wouldn’t complain about Megadeth either!

P4: Who have you toured with in your career so far?

S: We did a tour with Hatesphere with our first album. It was a blast! Great guys. Then we’ve toured with Caliban, Heaven Shall Burn, Neaera, Deadlock, Misery Speaks and Fire In The Attic. It was an X-Mas tour going through

Germany. Our friends in Dawn Of Demise tagged along on our tour through Denmark. If you like your death metal, make sure to check them out! They are amazing!!! Some other bands as well, but those were for longer runs.

P4: Which bands would you just as soon see disappear altogether?

S: I don’t hold any grudge towards other bands. Whatever works for them is cool with me.

P4: Which sub-genre of metal would you class yourself as?

S: I’d rather keep out of the sub-genre classification. We play metal!!!

P4: How did As We Fight come together?

S: Some of the guys met in a bar back in 2001! That’s how it’s done up here.

P4: Tell me about the members of As We Fight.

S: We do very different things. Gun works with computers, I’m studying English at the university, Jason has an

online musicshop, Martin is a plummer and Niller is in between jobs. Somehow we meet around playing metal!

P4: How did you come up with the name As We Fight?

S: It was before my time in the band, but I think that the other guys just picked something they thought sounded cool.

P4: What's it like where you live in Denmark.

S: I live in middle of Denmark, Odense, the hometown of HC Andersen, so it’s a big fairytale up here. Not really

actually, but it’s a nice town.

P4: What is your local scene like - are you one amongst many, or a lone torch bearer for Metal?

S: We’re definitely not a lone rider for metal here. The Danish metal scene exploded within the last few years with tons of bands being on big international metal labels – Hatesphere (SPV), Illdisposed (Roadrunner), Mnemic (Nuclear Blast), Mercenary (Century Media), Urkraft (Earache), Raunchy (Lifeforce) and cool bands like Koldborn, Dawn Of Demise, The Arcane Order, Submission on big labels too. Then of course Volbeat, who is getting huge in Europe!!!

P4: What do you want to achieve with As We Fight; a way to avoid mundane employment; noteriety amongst metal fans, or world domination?

S: We just want to have fun with it. If we can take it so far that we can live off it, then it would be awesome, but

that would be secondary. It’s all about having a good time with it.

P4: What have been As We Fight's highlights so far?

S: We’ve had many memorable experiences with the band. Support weekends for Caliban and All That Remains. The X-Mas Tour with Caliban and Heaven Shall Burn. The Hatesphere tour. The festivals are always fun! The shows with Volbeat in Denmark. (Between the start and end of this interview, As We Fight also did the MTV Headbanger's Ball Tour).

P4: Any lowlights?

S: The French shows on our recent European tour. The shows were a bit below par, but we were damn sick on top, so it was 10 days in hell due to the fact that we were sick as hell.

P4: Your also working in a new album, how is it coming along?

S: We had studiotime with Jacob Bredahl in January!

P4: What bands is Jacob Bredahl best known for working with?

S: He is probably best know for the work with his own band – Hatesphere. He also did some stuff with Barcode and Machinemade God. He’s doing tons of stuff though. He’s definitely a producer that you’ll hear more from in the future.

P4: When do you expect we'll be seeing it?

S: Hopefully around April 2008, but it depends on our label.

P4: Who did the artwork for “Midnight Tornado” and “Black Nails And Bloody Wrists” – it seems to be the same photographer . . . .

S: One of our friends did the artwork for those albums. His name is Michael Lauritsen Dahl. The concept for ‘Midnight Tornado’ is that the girl has poppy flowers behind her back, which is a symbol of the sleep of death. So a good looking fascade with death in the back!

P4: How has “Midnight Tornado” been received so far?

S: Primarily, we’ve received great reviews. It was metal album of the month in Rock Sound Italy, so that was pretty

cool! It is our second album, so we can definitely feel that there are certain expectations towards our work now compared to when our debut was released. It’s great to feel some anticipation though!

P4: Is it selling well?

S: Actually, I have no idea. I haven’t heard any sales figures, but I can definitely tell that a lot more people know our songs now. If they have downloaded the songs or bought our album, I don’t know. I don’t really care either… haha! As long as they rock to the tunes!

P4: Is “Annihilation” your first promotional video clip?

S: It is our first real music video. We’ve done some live videos before, but it is our first professional made music video.

P4: What other work has Division666 done?

S: They are mostly known for some work with Hatesphere. It’s a small company on the rise for sure. They really know how to work the production buttons.

P4: Soren, thanks for your time, looking forward to the new release, and everyone should check out Midnight Tornado and Black Nails and Bloody Wrists now.
